Clarke CS6-9C Belt Linisher

Introduction edit

Clarke CS6-9C Belt Linisher

The large linisher is a type of belt and disc sander that provides a large surface for sanding wood and grinding some metals.

The manual for the large linisher is here.

The large linisher lives in the main workshop downstairs, with a selection of replacement belts kept in a drawer underneath.

Belt size : 6" x 48" / 150mm x 1220mm
Disc size : 9" / 230mm self adhesive

Safety goggles should be worn when using the linisher. You may also want to use a suitable dust mask for the type of material being worked. Gloves should not be worn as they may catch on the belt.

The linisher is fitted with a dust extraction connector for use with one of the Scheppach dust extractors. This should always be used when working with wood, but never used when grinding metals as sparks may start a fire in the sawdust. Care should also be taken when grinding metal as there is often sawdust built up inside the black cover for the motor drive, and small fires can start in this area. It can be opened up with a small screwdriver to check this area is clean or safe.

After use, please clean the belt with the rubber block provided, or replace the belt with a fresh one if it is worn out using the procedure shown below. Note that incorrect belt change procedure can damage the linisher. Clean up any loose material from the linisher and the surrounding bench.

The linisher can be fitted with various types of belt; we only keep brown aluminium oxide belt in stock for general use but there are other types that members can buy for their own use. It's normally left fitted with a 60 grit belt and a 120 grit sanding disc - other grits may sometimes be available but check before starting work that what's fitted is suitable for your job.

Colour Code Users
Brown Aluminium Oxide - General purpose belt, good for use on all types of timber, ferrous and non-ferrous metals
Blue Zirconia - Good for use on ferrous metals but not suitable for any sort of timber
Red Ceramic - Fast cutting belt for use on ferrous metals and hardened metals only

If you do want a different type of belt then we normally buy them from Heritage Abrasives. It's worth posting on the list to see if a bulk order can be made to save on postage costs.

Maintenance Notes edit

  • The rubber cleaner can refresh belts, always check if a belt can be revived before replacement
  • Belts and discs should only be replaced if they're completely wrecked, even belts in poor condition can have quite a lot of life, and belts and discs are expensive.
  • Belts are 1220 x 150mm plain backed and sander discs are 230mm adhesive backed
  • Spare belts and discs are kept in the drawer under the linisher.
  • Brown belt is for wood, Blue is for metal, red for hardened tool steels. If working with metal the dust extraction should be turned off to stop sparks being sucked in.
  • Metal can be used on the brown belt, but wood must not be used on the blue belt, the red belt is suitable only for tool-steels
    • To replace the main belt:
  1. Remove the dust tray by loosening the three red thumb screws and one bolt on the guard rail (latter needs a spanner) taking care as the edges of the tray may be very sharp
  2. Loosen the lock nut on the belt tracking control and wind the tracking control all the way out
  3. Pull the lever forward to release the belt tension
  4. Slide off belt to the right
  5. Wrecked belts go in the general refuse, belts with some life left should go back in the drawer
  6. Give it a clean - remove dust and use acetone if very dirty
  7. Replace with 60 or 120 grit or whatever is to hand.
  8. Slide on a new belt - take note of the directional arrows on the belt and machine. Center it roughly in the middle.
  9. Finger tighten the nut on the guard rail so it is not in contact with the belt
  10. Carefully move the tension arm back to it's normal position
  11. Run the machine and quickly adjust the tracking as the belt will try and wander off to one side or another. This movement may be quite rapid at first.
  12. Once it is aligned and still running tighten the tracking nut
  13. Stop the machine and re-attach the dust tray
    • To change the sanding disc
  1. Remove the platter by loosening the two screws at the bottom and pulling the bed forwards to get access
  2. Peel the old disc off the platter
  3. Clean the platter with acetone if there is any adhesive residue left
  4. Press the new disc firmly onto the platter all around the disc
  5. Reinstall the bed
